The Story of Treats
I grew up in a little village in Northern Louisiana. My town is so small it really is a village but we do have a post office, high school, a gas station, and all the southern charm you could ever want. The road I grew up on has 'Sweet' in its name which is where the 'sweet' in my name came from. I wish I could tell you that I grew up loving to cook with my Mama but the fact is I was kicked out home economics because I refused to learn the difference between a pan and boiler. You can laugh, looking back I was living my best life by being stubborn. My friends would tease me saying I couldn't boil water! They weren't far from the truth.
I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my Mama. She always seemed to be in there doing something or cleaning something. Her kitchen had, and still has, a very large island. Like, I could lay down on it without hanging over the side kind of big. Mama made wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and any other special occasion cake you could think of. Our house always smelled good. My friends loved coming over because my mom was such a great cook. Lots of great memories were made in that kitchen. Mama thought I wasn't listening to her while she was rambling on about measurements and such things, I thought I wasn't listening either, but I was taking it all in to use it later in life.
That later in life came bit sooner than I thought it would. I grew up, earned a couple of degrees, joined the United States Army, and move away from my little village. It didn't take me long to realize that starving wasn't a good look for me and eating out for every meal was going to put me in the poor house. So, I started cooking in the barracks while I was a single soldier. I met my husband and decided if I could keep him alive then maybe I wasn't such a bad cook after all. There were some meals that won't EVER be repeated. Ask my husband if he wants beef stroganoff for dinner and watch his face turn green. But then there are recipes that I have been working on since our youngest child was born almost thirteen years ago. It's those recipes and the ones my Mama has given to me that I want to share with you. When you eat one of my treats, I want to take you back to my Mama's kitchen and all the yummy goodness that is there. Welcome home.
